We don't use the term "Angel" around here, but to use the more inclusive term Celestial Beings, that's who created and recruited for these neighborhoods. They're always conscientious and wear human suits. Be not afraid!
Celestial Beings is a term also inclusive of the maintainers of the Bad Place, a force of necessary evil whom you might call "devils" or "demons", but you don't need to worry about that here... The real strength of Celestial Beings is their thousand of years of experience collectively determining how to make the Good Place neighborhoods as good as they can be! ...they definitely don't have late night drinking parties or try to trick the human residents into cheating on their soulmates/wives. |

The Good Place is full of fun things you can do. Like fly!! Get a talking puppy! Every kind of cat! Taste the most delicious ice cream flavor in the universe! And who makes it all possible? Mainly... Janet! The Celestial Beings have created anthroids to run the neighborhoods. Usually one per neighborhood but this one is a little big. A lot of Janets are dressed the same and, you know, called Janet, but call your friendly neighborhood anthroid whatever they want to be called, just not late for dinner. Because they can teleport instantly.

This is an AU "game" (meme), not a jamjar. Characters may come from wildly different life circumstances (including characters dying hundreds of years apart yet arriving in this neighborhood at the same time), arrive suddenly in the Good Place, and meet several total strangers, but "oh, we're just brought together suddenly from separate worlds!" is discouraged.
Limiting supernatural phenomena to only those related to The Good Place is highly encouraged. Furthermore, tying supernatural phenomena into the lore of The Good Place is highly encouraged. Resets within an afterlife may be more suitable than time travel that took place on Earth, for instance.
As such, characters are encouraged to be depicted as either humans, anthroids ("Janets"), Celestial Beings, or Higher Celestial Beings. (The Good Place wiki uses the term "immortal being". Higher Celestial Being is a term coined by Lenga to refer to beings with a different purpose and greater powers than folks on-the-ground in Good Place or Bad Place neighborhoods.) Picking the type most similar to your character's canon status, whatever that means to you, is encouraged but not required, go wild!!
Lenga's first modification to the lore is that the multiple neighborhoods can be diverse. It's important for the good to be rewarded and the bad to be punished because it maintains a balance of entropy in the universe (though some might disagree on what's good or bad). There may be a kinda bad place for rebellious high schoolers, a really bad place where murderers and child abusers and Jihyun Kim are continuously attacked with aggressive animals and corrosive substances, a Good Place that is full of Care Bears and rainbows, and most notably, "Valhalla-like" neighborhoods where battles are frequent. This is to allow players the opportunity to depict diverse experiences.
Lenga's second modification to the lore is that Celestial Beings may be either innate Celestial Beings, or Celestial Beings who used to be human, died, and after some time and actively pursued experiences in the afterlife became Celestial Beings. Either type would have equivalent powers and so on. This is just a reasonable next step that opens up far more easy parallels to some characters' backstories.
Story Outline

Makima is a Demon (innate). She has been taken away from her own plans (almost identical to Eva's just with more chainsaws) and coerced to assist in this neighborhood, henceforth "Makima's neighborhood".
Makima's neighborhood is administrated by a group of Celestial Beings, generally "demons". This team of demons are all aware of each other's identity upon being introduced, like in Werewolf/Mafia games. Demons may either present in the role of Angels, or in the role of human residents, or do something else.
Humans may either arrive in Makima's neighborhood directly after their deaths on Earth, or be transferred into Makima's neighborhood after having already spent time in a different afterlife neighborhood.
Janets/anthroids may be accomplices of the Demons, or they may genuinely believe they are working to help Makima, an Angel, in a Good Place neighborhood, or something else.
Moriarty is an Angel who used to be human. He has infiltrated the neighborhood to try to help.

The characters in this AU technically have distinct character designs, colorful and stylized. Akane's dress and sweater are shuffled around into a big flowy design like Tahani. Makima is wearing a red tie with subtly red off-whites, because she is a Demon. Moriarty is wearing a blue bow tie with subtly blue off-whites, because he is an Angel.
